Over the last 6 months or so I've been building a small CO2 laser as part of a school project, going towards my A levels and university as application. Most people use a neon sign transformer for the power supply as they're designed to power gas discharge tubes for prolonged periods of time, but I wanted to make my own power supply and wound my own flyback transformer and powered it with a ZVS, however just as I finished the laser tube and was getting ready to connect it to my power supply my transformer seems to have shorted out internally. I haven't got the time to wind another transformer, especially if I can't prevent internal breakdown, I even vacuum potted my last one in oil. So what I'm looking for is a neon sign transformer of 10kv plus and 20mA plus output cheaply, I'm doing this project to a deadline and I'v invested a lot so far, in the optics especially, and have to get this going. As you can imagine this is being done to a student's budget so cheap is pretty vital,

Thanks.

Hi HDF49
I have a 15kv 30ma neon, I would sell it for $50 plus postage, it cost me $175, but I don't know what the postage will be from New Zealand to were you are, It weights at least 10-15kg.

I've got some 9kV (4k-0-4k) 30mA NSTs which should rise to 10kV easily if you add them a bridge rectifier and ballast (or even a half bridge rectifier or a doubler so you keep the center tap at ground potential)

I also have some 6kv (3k-0-3k) 50~60mA if I recall

please PM me an offer for it if interested... I'm from Belgium and shipping cost is something like 39.20€ for between 10kg and 20kg

Thanks for the offers guys, I'd pounce on yours Andy if it wasn't for the postage, I got a quote for $260.... Hi Shrad, I'm having a conversation with a man local to me about a power supply so I'll get back to you soon.

if you are looking to vary the voltage or current, you can always use a phase angle control... I can give you some control IC which you could use so a 0-5V input value would give 5~95 percent of input AC voltage you can then feed to the xformer... you could then have electronic control which could be better than a variac, but power factor would be horrible ^^

Hi Shrad, thanks for the offer but I've been offered a 28kv laser power supply along with an 80 watt laser tube free of charge by a man about 30 minutes from me, so I think I'm going to pounce on that offer!
