This!
That looks like a sci-fi movie prop... yet it's real. I must obtain one, one day!
This one was used to charge up a giant marx generator system. The 600kV is rectified and then charges up each stage of the marx generator. Hardcore stuff!

Is there any calculators out there where I can enter dimensions of a core to determine what its Current capability is? For example: __=|(:3)-|--{__ wanted to build his 13KW 20Khz ferrite how big would it have to be.

Hi Chris Cristini I think its flux = volts/(hz*turns) , ferrite has 8.0×10−4H/m 1000volt/20000*100 = 0.0005H/m you need about 1m3 at 1000turns you need 30cm*30cm

Planar ferrite, very large cross section but very short path length, with pie windings. Vacuum drawn oil or epoxy filled...
no question in my mind... how else will you minimize loss, minimise heat, maximize power capability and maximize volts per turns.? !? then you can h-bridge each primary, and parrellel or series the outputs if your wise about it....
Cris Cristini, as for your question on calculating power, i looked and looked for more than a year, and found two possible answers, yes and no. first, the transformers are generally heat limited, of both the copper and ferrite. If you melt the copper winding its dies, if you heat the ferrite or saturate it, it loses its magnetic properties. so those are the typicall "red lines" you cross and theres no coming back. Second, as for the simulation, you really dont get simple algebra or calculus, youll need a full CFD type program, then program in your models, and destroy a few prototypes to validate it...
so i think thats the ugly answer you didnt want to here.

The truth behind everything is never ugly thanks Patrick.
And thank you andy if I can actually make a core with high enough density that works I could discover a lot of potential help to the HV comunity. Would be great for ZVS and switch mode applications
Also does any one think a ferrite variac would work for a variatable voltage smps even though most computer power supply's have a pot for voltage control. Intersting ideas have been running through my head lately.

For me, the interesting point in the video above is the fact that you 'may' be able to sinter these ferrites in a microwave oven. While I'm not sure how suitable magnetite is for a core, I assume it may be possible to sinter other ferrites in a microwave oven. Can anyone comment on this?
