Hi,
So the 2X2A tube arrived, and I'm working on the voltage multiplier. And I have sufficient quantity of lead so...
I was thinking of putting the 2X2A in a section of PVC pipe, which will then have lead wrapped around it. The ends of the pipe will have lead attached, which will be coated with wax, and an HV wire shall go through a hole in one of those, while the pins on the tube will be connected to the lead itsself.
As far as I can tell this should be fine, but do you think I could make this any better?
And as for the hole in the lead through which the xrays should travel... I should cover this with aluminum to remove the soft xrays.
What is the optimum size for this hole through the lead, since maybe too large a hole would result in a blurred image?

Whatever you might think about making a good light-tight box - for storing unexposed film, perhaps - will also apply to a box made to contain these shorter wavelengths, except, of course, the stuff out of which the container is made. Lead is a good choice where compactness is necessary.
Radiation due to field emission electron bombardment inside 2X2A is not uniformally distributed around the metal elements, and some parts radiate much more strongly than others. Most of the activity is in the lower half of the valve, below the edge of the anode bell when the valve is held upright.
There is no single focal spot, as we find in an imaging x-ray tube, so no great resolution is possible.
