Hello, I'm looking for some opinions regarding the feasibility of a ECHELON/ONYX type surveillance network, on a hobbyist level. By this I mean the ability to intercept COMSAT and other such communications, in addition to military frequencies in the VHF/UHF and lower HF bands. Then, sort through the resulting information looking for specific keywords or "flags." Sorting the information could easily be accomplished. Sensitive military/government transmissions in the VHF/UHF/Lower HF bands are of course going to be encrypted and frequency hopping is also a given. However this "project" I'm interested in is more for a proof of concept purpose than actual surveillance. What I am more interested in is the monitoring of satellite communications. Would it be feasible to intercept, for example, diplomatic transmissions being downlinked by a government/military facility? Keep in mind I am talking about on a hobbyist level, just for fun and to demonstrate how such systems operate. If there is anybody on the forum who has ideas/experience in this field, I would love to be able to pick your brain about it.

I would hope that anything sensitive would be encrypted and unlike GCHQ/NSA decryption would be extremely difficult, and I hope that no one here on 4HV would be involved,
try joining Lulzsec or similar.
AFAIK any deliberate interception of voice/data etc. that is meant to be private is an offence
... as it should be.

Heh, well said.
Also what are you trying to accomplish? I've been researching "keyword searches" on local radio so that any serious incident flags an alert on my phone so in the event of a serious nuclear accident etc action can be taken.

Given that I live less than 20 miles from the biggest reprocessing plant in Europe, an accident here would be disastrous and directly affect me and everyone I know.

Even if we don't consider legal issues, the military and government establishments have been encrypting their stuff for years. The majority of public Internet data still isn't encrypted at all. So it is a lot easier for "them" to spy on "us" than vice versa. Of course criminal gangs have been using encryption, Tor and the like for as long as it has been around.

In most European countries, the police and other emergency services have changed from analog radio to Tetra, an encrypted digital system not unlike GSM. The railways also use something similar. It's a fairly old system so I doubt the encryption is that strong. Maybe with Gnuradio and a bit of work, you could unscramble it, and that would give you some experience for taking on more ambitious projects. Get back to us if you ever figure out those US Navy VLF transmissions to their nuclear submarines! (Of course I can't recommend that you actually do this as it is illegal, see Sulaiman's post above smile )
