I did some research on this recently and I found it to be very interesting, The tower was used as an early warning system for the Soviet's Anti-Ballistic Missile system. However the tower remains in the zone of alienation around Chernobyl.

Fascinating stuff indeed. Did anyone hear that some areas around Chernobyl are now more biologically diverse than the Amazon ? Something to do with the lack of pesky humans methinks.
