Hello all,
after I broke off my kickstart on my scooter, I began using the electric start. It will start fine when the engine is warm, but will take maybe 10 tries to start otherwise. Battery is charged...
Is there something I could maybe add to the fuel to help it start up?I dont want to kill the starter trying so many times like this.
BTW- It is a 4 stroke, 49cc scooter...
Thanks!
Matt

I dont think its the starter, it will start up fine when warm and full of gas...Its never wanted to start up easily via electric...Its just a very pathetically small motor. Seems having high octane gas is giving it more trouble to start it. Id try the cheap gas, but the dealer warned it would cause the engine to fail.

i'm sure the starter is fine otherwise it wouldn't start the thing in the first place.

what is happening when it takes a long time to start is that it is trying to get enough fuel to do it.

i recomend cleaning or replacing the fuel filter. if that dosen't do it then there may be an obstruction any where starting from the fuel tank leading up to the throtle body. check your feul lines. try to see if there flth in the tank.

if you feal confidant in the task of taking appart and cleaning the carborator with out cuaseing damage to the gaskets then that will be your last resort.

so. if it dose infact have a fuel filter then i'm prety sure that it's just dirty. if you don't have comressed air to blow it clean then get a new one.

Matt

so you mean kick starting was fine, even with cold engine?
and what do you mean by full of gas, gas level shouldnt' matter at all.

you might have killed a few windings by overheating it.

are you sure that you are priming it? Taking a lot of time to start seems pretty typical od people forgetting to fully prime the engine...

There is no priming. Everything on this scooter is auto. "Twist and go". The fuel filter sounds like a logical thing to try, has never been cleaned, and has over 2200miles on it now. Would a can of compressed air meant for cleaning computers work?

Since it starts easier with a full tank of gas, i think this may be the deal. Keep in mind, this is a scooter, and not a premium kind...No fancy fuel injection or anything. Gravity fed fuel, ect.

high octain is ment for engines with higher compresion. i'd asume yours is not high compresion. inwich case the cheep stuff is the best for your engine. or you could say your engine is designed to use the cheep stuff.

caned compressed air dose not put out high enough volume/presure to cleen out the filter. filters are cheep.:P or goto a garage and ask nicely if you can blow out the filter (free of charge)
