I've gone on a bit of a jewelry making tangent and am interested in knowing the material and process used to coat copper in a clear, robust coating like they do on enameled wire so that my rings don't turn people's fingers green. Yea, I know I could google it, but that won't give me the type of do it yourself answer like I'm sure you guys will

Does dipping it or pulling it through a vat of whatever coating you want in a viscous liquid form not work? I think that's basically how its done with plastic insulation but I'm not positive.

It is simply dipped in a vat of resin.
For your rings you can use spray polyurethane, or I have seen people just paint them with nail polish. Just make sure the ring is clean to start with so you get a good bond.

Tried brass, still turned my friend's finger green I guess. I don't know what kind of coating I want, so I haven't tried anything yet. Guess I'll just buy some various coatings and try them out. Thanks guys.

How about clear vitreous enamel on the copper? The kind applied by fusing. It might tend to be extra thin over any sharp edges, but that would apply to organic resins too.
I recently took a homemade copper ring and tinned it all over with lead-free solder (SAC305). That solved the green skin problem, but started to wear through & show the copper after less than a month on my finger.

Copper reacts with a coating and eventually breaks it down. An interesting coating, if you can find it, is Glyptal. It comes in some colors. It is baked on.
