building a simple timer

I feel I will be building a timer. Let's say it will count 120 seconds. There will be two timers, with one starting 60 seconds after the other. when it hits 120 it will switch off; when it counts to 120 again it will switch on. what is the best chip for counting? Is it a decade counter? I just need someone to point me in the right direction to save me time; I can do the rest.

Yeah, probably a 555 timer plus some decade counters. Alternatively, if you need something more accurate you could go with a crystal oscillator, like this Link2

4040 and 4060 chips (ye olde 4000 series CMOS) are purpose built for that sort of thing. 4060 has an oscillator section which can use RC, crystal or ceramic resonator, followed by 12 binary stages, 4040 is just a 14 stage counter.

But, wouldn't it be better to get a low cost uC dev board, preferrably one with an LCD display already attached, and program it. Waay cooler, and more flexible.

I have some extra ATMega chips that I could easily program as a counter. I could just count from 0 to X and repeat. I could toggle the first output on X and second on X/2
