Here's me with a few of the displays I ran at the open day last weekend. You should recognise the laser stuff and the can crusher. Also had ferrofluid, free shocks from my candy box HV supply and the popular vortex generator. The setup took 3 hours mostly due to the Faraday cage. Add another hour or two for packing up and 4 hours travelling with a big trailer and it made quite a long day for me and my two slaves (sons).

That's so great!
I'm trying to get an 8' tall Jachob's ladder for our Science Learning Center here.
Nobody even really looked at my Tesla coil last open house, which sorta makes me mad because I worked really hard to make it pretty for the on campus 'brass'.
After I get around to making the ring tosser SCR-reliable the learning center will have one of those too.

Seriously, its an awesome demonstration. I'm going to suggest to our group here to use one for the Lockheed Martin Family Day coming up in September. Be great for the kids.

The best results were to run the TC first. The scream of a 1200bps asynchronous gap and the 3-4 ft sparks brings people from a distance to see what the noise is about. With an audience you can then demonstrate the more mundane things. I use the can crusher with the can just sitting with the base in the work coil. This crushes the base and shoots it into the crowd which I get to separate to allow a corridor for it to be shot out in. The Maxwell cap is only running at about 1kJ for this stuff out of its 4kJ capacity. I indicate people to cover their ears for all these noisy demos and little kids to be back further. For smaller groups or individuals I showed the ferrofluid or gave free shocks. A little magnetic demo with 2 NIB magnets in a 6 inch length of PVC with south poles out was also fun. Impossible to bring together and also safe for kids as the magnets can't slam together. I needed to sign a legal form to indicate my equipment was to be loaned/controlled by the Dept to be included in their public liability.
