I have been using the attached circuit for some time as it is easy to implement from camera flash circuits. However, the time has come where I would like to maybe add a meter. Without getting too complex, can a meter easily be added to this circuit and, if so, how?

Here is one version of a simple add-on ratemeter.
Note that the ratemeter (above) is not to be confused with the common ratmeter used to monitor the comings and goings of rodents through holes in the skirting boards.

Since this is a simple circuit, and the utility of the Piezo ticker is important, you might consider adding a salvaged electret condenser microphone to the buzzer and use Proud Mary's meter amplifier to measure the rate. The meter itself likely will integrate the pulses to yield up a value. Capacitor might be added across the coil.
