I have a diffraction tube but have never used it.

You need to know what element forms the anode. The requirement for diffraction tubes is not just to work at "low" voltages. Ideally they would produce only monochromatic x-rays at a characteristic energy of the target metal. The bremstrahlung continuum just muddies the diffraction picture ( AFAIK ).

I'm sure Proud Mary can tell you all about the usual metals and photon energies.

I would not recommend the BS-7, for your purpose (as I understand it), Vlad, because of its very low fluence, and the intrinsic filtering effect of the transmission target attenuating the low energy part of the output spectrum.

Why not get something capable of greater fluence, like the dear old BSM-1, which has a maximum input of 4.5W, and is a tube of great character but modest requirements: Link2

I see Sovtube are offering a BSM-1 with Co anode Link2 which will have strong line emission at 6.9 keV.

I found that 2.3 kV was the anode voltage lower limit at which ionising radiation could be detected at the Be window of a BSM-1-Ni - well below the 5 kV anode voltage point at which the UK Ionising Radiation Regulations 1999 and related EC regulations kick in.

Ask SovTube about the condition of the Be windows before you buy, as I have seen examples of BSM-1 with severe corrosion that probably means they spent too long in a landfill before someone dug them up again.
