I thought the same initially, but once I did a FEMM simulation I've changed my mind. Can't be 100% sure, of course, but I keep with this opinion so far. Maybe I've just tried too big hole, or coil should have been of different shape (not "ideal")...

My first batch was made from the bars found in inkjet printers. Cut into segments, put into a drill press, and shaped with a hand grinder. Then electroless nickel cobalt plated just for kicks. Now I just use solenoid plungers because it takes zero work, and I'm fairly certain they've got to be made from a decently ferromagnetic material.

Research done by Andrews & Devine (1991) claimed that wound projectiles perform slightly better than equivalent solid projectiles, but that is far outweighed by the practicality and convenience of a solid metal projectile over a precision wound projectile.
