I think I found the reason why energy saving light bulbs are not supposed to be used with dimmer switches. However, it is a very easy way to produce a nice strobe light!
In the UK, a lot of people I know are moving towards towards energy saving light bulbs, probably due to the recent energy review. This includes our household, and my bedroom which happens to be equipped with a dimmer switch. Obviously you're not supposed to use a dimmer with energy savers, so up to now I have been turning it up to full power as quickly as possible. But tonight, after nearly a whole bottle of the finest Scotch whisky I could afford, I was feeling adventurous.
The result was a nice strobe effect and a slightly damaged bulb I guess I should go to bed.

I'm not sure what sort it is, it just looks like a normal bulb but fluorescent
I suppose if the tube or whatever can pulse like that without dying, it would make quite an entertaining thing with the right driver circuitary, timed to the beat Another idea for a future project...
