Hello everyone!
First time posting and I had a question about the effect of magnetic fields created by coils.
I have seen multi stage coilguns and my question is this:
If a projectile is already moving at say 20 fps, if it were to pass through a coil created feild would it slow down from its original speed or would it accelerate.
an example would be a nail being pushed into a coil using air pressure rather than it being stationary before launch.

Basically, powered coils attract iron to their center. So iron will always experience a force toward the center of a powered coil. The trick is to power a coil so that it sucks in the projectile (adding momentum to the projectile), then turn the coil off as the projectile reaches the center, so that the projectile will not experience "suckback" - that is, the slowing down of the projectile because it has passed the coil and now experiences a backwards force instead of a forwards one.

So reguarless of the initial speed, as long as the projectile doesn't get caught in the middle of the coil and experience back force it will accelerate

Yes. You should start from Wiki, actually.

Pre-acceleration will increase efficiency (if timing is correct, of course).
