Hi..
So there I was, wondering why someone hasn't made a device for bicycles that highlights ice spots up ahead with a blue laser...
And what should I find on the Net, but this Link2

Interesting, can only assume they are using a "fast" version of the Melexis sensor with a mirror galvo scanner similar to that used on barcode "matrix" scanners at supermarkets.

If this is the case, how are they getting around the inherent randomness of such a scanner?!

The sensing device on that is an uncooled hyperthin pyroelectric ceramic. They say uncooled as in no need for cryogenic cooling but they usually have a heat-sink at least. Here is a short paper on them. Link2

These sensors are interesting, they differ from thermoelectric sensors that rely on the Seebeck Effect rather using the pyroelectric effect. Link2



The ice spot idea is pretty cool. I would use a green laser or anything but blue because chromatic aberration makes blue hard to focus on. And really shining a laser at a spot of ice on the road at a low angle (couldn't be much more than 20 degrees max depending on the distance of the spot) might not be good since it will reflect at that same angle possibly into oncoming traffic. Plus the laser would really only be useful at night or in low light. What you need is a heads up display, visor display, or even just a small screen mounted on the bike just like the one on that Fluke visual IR thermometer. Anyway still a cool idea.
