If you're obtaining repeatable results - more power to you. I have no doubt the arduino can accurately measure down to 10microseconds.

However - depending on the length of your armature, you may end up pushing down to, say, 1uS where the arduino may miss this event.

I would think that two photo gates separated by 10cm would allow more wiggle room.

Thanks for advice, I will do some more testing to measure the accuracy at higher speeds. I appreciate that the error will also increase with shorter armatures!

I am working with a fairly low power single stage at the moment, and adding more stages at a later date, so hopefully I can use this method for the single-stage testing, and then create a double light-gate arrangement for the higher speeds. I'll let you know how I get on!

FWIW from my experiments in some situations the arduino can measure and is accurate down to about 1 microsecond; the real time clock only clicks every ten microseconds but the processor can do a busy wait loop to interpolate below that; if it's doing nothing else.

To get the maximum speed you probably need to read from the IO registers rather than use the library.
