1354677231 4659 FT0 Reciprocatingcoilgun

So, I was thinking about multistage coilguns, and how copper is expensive. Then I had this idea. This coilgun has just one coil, but it has spring-backed plates at both ends of the barrel. You put a projectile in the tube, close it, and fire the coil. This shoots the projectile towards one of the plates, which uses the spring to bounce the projectile back in the direction it came from (ideally with 100% of it's original velocity, but in the real world it would be like 90%). Then, as the projectile approaches the coil again, it fires again, shooting it into the OTHER plate, giving it even more energy. The projectile bounces back and forth, faster and faster, until the hinge opens up one side of the barrel, and the projectile shoots out with tons of speed.

It's sort of inspired by how a laser works:
Svg

Light bounces back and forth in the chamber before escaping out one end.

Does this idea seem interesting or am I just crazy?

You are just crazy. :)
But you can make a generator out of this - just put neodym instead of the iron and shake this thing to generate electricity. :)
Actually, it is even possible to make a hand-driven charger for your coilgun:

I tried this - it works, but energy generated is just enough to power a LED.
The best coil for this would have the thinnest wire possible, the shortest in length and thick in outer diameter.

What if you take his original idea but make it one big ring of electromagnets that are set up just right to suspend the projectile (probably be best is it's a sphere) whilst accelerating the projectile round and round (particle accelerator style). I've seen this somewhere else on the forum I think, perhaps it was sazz.... ill go digging

EDIT: And Yandersen perhaps tell him why it wouldn't work instead of just saying it wont. And as to the laser, i could be wrong here Havn't cheeked up on my laser theory but scince the speed of light is a constant a laser tube amplifies the amount of light instead of accelerating it I beleive.

Why wouldn't? It would. In two ways:
1) the accelerated projectile will brake the jumper and fly from random end of the pipe;
2) your GF will like the vibrations this thing make and take it from you for good.

You really want to build this "thing"? Is it worth time? If you do, use a circled pipe and ball - at least less energy will be dissipated by friction.

This is basically just a high powered electric clock pendulum isn't it?

Hi Yanom

Well, there's no particular reason why the idea wouldn't work, but note that the maximum speed you'd be able to acheive with it will be exactly the same as if you pre-loaded one spring and used it to inject the projectile into the coil.

A circular coilgun would be interesting, provided you can construct it so that it doesn't fall apart from centrifugal forces.

it would be good to see how fast you could accelerate a ball bearing round a circular tube
a bit like a particle accelerator
