On my last trip to the physics dept at the uni I was lucky to be given some freebies. They included a 60kV DC 300mA x-ray transformer which I thought was single phase but looks like 3 phase running off 240V 45A. Weighs 300kg, oil filled. Also a dual variac, probably twin 5kW, a strong DC electromagnet and a 2KVA 240 to 110V stepdown transformer.
Pic shows the x-ray transformer and variac. I have wiring (shown) for a 240V 32A socket and also a multi-tapped x-ray ballast transformer (not shown). You can also see a 100K copper/copper sulphate resistor in a tube.
Despite groans of protest from my normal variac, I was able to pull a 6 inch arc at half power through the 100k resistor.
Haven't really decided what to do with it yet. Would be nice as a Marx supply driving a long x-ray tube or to make that electron beam in free air.

It got put on my trailer by hoist. At the other end (400k later), I tied it to a tree and pulled it from the centre of the trailer to the rear by driving forward. Then with 3 people levering up the trailer with some shaking slid it rather inelegantly off the back of the trailer onto its wheeled trolley. Its descent was controlled with a gradually slackened rope. Only spilt a little oil... Zero chance of me getting it back on a trailer. Still they managed to build Stonehenge and the pyramids. Just takes lots of slaves I suppose.
Pic is the faceplate.
BTW although they were free, I have made them a can crusher and a Tesla coil for free...
