Hi, just to add my $0.02 worth. A good way to generate neutrons is to obtain some BeCu alloy from any old switch, as they often used it for the button to stop it breaking down under constant use. Then install over 241Am source and use indium activation to measure the neutrons using conventional end window Geiger or modified CMOS camera.
Please note, 241Am while "relatively" safe should still be treated with respect, if the source is in any way damaged it could become airborne and if you inhale or ingest any, it could give you cancer eventually. If you are using a smoke alarm for the source, it is best to leave it in the casing and just remove the top lid with the warning on it, and ideally install a cover over it and store in a >1mm lead or >3mm bismuth lined box when not in use.
Additional warning:- radium makes americium look wimpy, and has gammas to boot. (229Ra) If you use radium remember the sad tale of Undark and the Radium Girls, and that was relatively low level exposure. Radium also generates radon during its decay which can also cause cancer by inhalation.
A slightly safer method is to buy an encapsulated alpha source from United Nuclear, which has all the appropriate shielding etc included.
