The field of 1kV/cm is a ballpark estimate. It depends on the geometry of the receiving electrode and its voltage. The required air flow speed is based on the drift velocity of ions in an electric field. A rough empirical relation is v=1km/s *sqrt(E), where E is the field in kV/cm.

Thank Uspring. With ion drift how would you trap ions in a cyclotron and keep them accelerated.
Would something like this work. How would I be able to accelerate the ions

There is some good reading on this site regarding ion sources for cyclotrons, and plenty of background into how to do what you are suggesting re. cyclotrons. Link2

My own outline of an ion source is on the same site here: Link2

Thanks Ash Small. I was wondering if its possible to trap the ions into a circular path and to be able to accelerate them rather than them fly outwards.
The goal was to generate a field that happens in circular particle accelerates, maximizing it by small radius and high speed, but they need to be contained.

Ideas?

Maybe you should google 'Penning Trap' for starters.
