Anyone know a good design for an array of interlocking linear actuators

I guess the easiest way is to look at it as power (watts)
= Force x Distance x frequency, (N.m.s-1 in SI)
factor in loads of losses, (no idea ..x2?) x Duty Cycle
Then see what size/technology motor/actuator suits you.
Anything of lower power will not be reliable.

see, i really dont want to do this with anything other than solenoids, specifically i dont want to use motors, partially but not entirely because of the noise made.

I really need to know how to set up a solenoid array to get the most overall contraction, anything but solenoids and electromagnets is completely out of the question here.

I took apart a PS3 optical block, mounting many of these mini servos on a single linear carrier strip would make a very effective "stick-slip" e-muscle and a small current used to hold position of each.

Alternate idea was to make a hexapod walker with them as they are fairly robust.

Some manufacturers provide help to developers.

If you mechanically interconnect N solenoids to increase pull distance,
N-1 solenoids bodies would have to move, (not good)
if all of the bodies are fixed then the pulling force would be multiplied by N
with no change in pull distance,
whether the solenoids are mounted linearly or in parallel.
