after opening up a magnatron today I have been questioning the titles on "EM spectrum charts" that I have seen in school. I think grouping radios and microwaves together with light is false. instead it should be named "frequency spectrum chart" .

The main reason I think this is because magnatrons are a mechanically based radio transmitter, it takes a plus and a minus, a mechanical oscillator and an antenna. has anyone ever done that with "light" ???? I think the statement electron=photon is FALSE

any one care to explain?

if it is false then technology has not developed anywhere since the microwave oven. just more of the same, higher density, and adjusted the recipe so it all fits together nicely for now.

I don't think anyone is claiming a photon is the same as a electron.

Its all the same thing. However, the size of a light band antennae is much much smaller than that for radio or microwave.

Heck, the minute differences in atomic orbital energy band dimensions are what is normally necessary to emit or absorb light.

I guess what I am asking is for proof, has anyone built a "light band antennae" have they noted different behavior than radio. ever wonder if it really is the same thing? I guessing it might not be. where is the experiments to show that it is?

A simple demonstration of similar behavior is polarization
another is diffraction.

I used to do a lot of work with lasers and fibre optics. They behave just like little magnetrons and waveguides. smile The only difference is that as the frequency goes up, quantum effects become more obvious. The amount of energy in a "photon" of microwave radiation is so small that you probably couldn't detect it as a discrete entity.

The magnetron isn't a mechanical oscillator, it's an electron device. The only part that moves or vibrates is the electron cloud around the cathode.

Yes they have received and transmitted light using nano-tube antennas.

Not at optical wavelengths yet, but in deep IR ... yes they have.

Antennas can already be made at optical wavelengths, the problem is the oscillators and rectifiers.
