I am gearing up to make my own liquid air. I am going to build a refrigeration unit that will give me O2, N2 and Ar. I have access to sodium hydroxide/calcium hydroxide CO2 absorbers, which should also pull out the humidity.

What I may have to do is use fractional distillation. I'll let the N2 evaporate first and use some of the excess liquid air to cool the evaportated liquid.

I would prefer to have just N2 going into the compressor so I don't have to distill the product. I know I could start of with a tank of N2, but this defeats the purpose of getting my product from raw air. Plus, I don't feel like lugging an H-cyclinder around.

Thanks, but I've seen all of this. It is just talking about what I said above: I will most likely evaporate the N2 and cool it in the the distiller with some of my excess product. Wiki refers to cooling the distiller with an additional refrigeration cycle.

why won't a magnet work?

You need pure LOX to see that kind of effect.

I would be inclined to go with passing the air over a bed of heated metal, as someone else mentioned, to remove the oxygen, before compressing.

I had considered this before myself, since I wanted dry nitrogen, and found the membranes to be much too expensive.

If you need LOX after you have produced LN2, it will condense from the air on the outside of a single walled flask of LN2 anyway, but be aware that if LOX contaminates any organic materials, they will become highly flammable, and in a lot of cases highly sensitive explosives.
