Recently, a cascade fiber fuse occurred due to some defective optics failing (e-bay).
I cut off the melted line and connector, recast the good bundle in epoxy, and re-ground a polished FC end.
I almost put this under the most "expensive mistake" thread, as when tested the end connection temperature became white-hot and failed again.
Ok, now the weird part... I repeat the exact same process, but run the initial test under water. However, it only boils for a few seconds (suggesting its cooking off contaminates) and then begins to function relatively normally.
The connectors seems fine for the first 20-30 seconds in regular air, but must still be attenuating a bit as the temperature begins to slowly climb again.
It would be helpful if anyone has some safe-operating-temperature range advice, or suggest another brand of epoxy better rated for deep IR?

What about using UV cured resin aka the stuff used for repairing car windscreens? This is also sold on ebay and usually sets in minutes under moderately greasy (aka shorter than 375nm) UV at an ambient temperature of 30 Celsius. I used some to repair glass and it worked well.

FYI, the epoxy co-polymer component mix was off, and the residue was smearing into the polishing surfaces. Trying other brands seems like the best option...
