So I finally got a high voltage SCR that I'll be using to trigger the coilgun. How do most people trigger their SCRs? With an independent circuit of some sort, hooked up to a battery? Or do you pass current from the positive terminal of the coilgun's capacitor (through a resistor) to the gate of the SCR?

I made a little monostable multivibrator to source a known current slightly above the rated maximum current to trigger all the SCRs through the gate so I wouldn't have to worry about it not fully turning on or anything. I also added a 1k resistor and a .1uF between the gate and the cathode to try to prevent false triggering.

I used a 7404 hex inverter chip on mine to trigger each stage of my coilgun since the input at each stage was triggered by photodiodes. The first stage was triggered by a 9v battery on a voltage regulator which took it down to 5v (since that was the threshold voltage on my scrs) with a nice little resistor in line with the gate so it didn't fry the gate.

I've drawn these three diagrams of possible triggering mechanisms. Do any of these look good? (All the pictured batteries are 9volt) (The 11ohm resistor in series with the coil represents the coil's internal resistance. It's a big coil :)

It's worth noting that my coilgun is 1 stage only, so timing/automation isn't an issue.

I received a nice primer on SCR gate driving over in the general forum

Link2

Hopefully helpful for you too.
