Something similar to a 6146- PM me with what you have when you get a chance- right around 20-25W plate dissipation.

Do you have any ideas on the size of the tank capacitor you would use? Would 220pf be a good place to start, maybe?

Also, Steve, what are the extra little vertical lines in the tube, one has a wire connected to "ground"?- I see the screen and the grid (which is which??)

Since you are using such a low voltage I would recomend a larger cap (.5nf perhaps) Although with you high operating frequiency, you migh get a decent spark out of a .2nf... How long of a streamer are you aiming for? I think I was getting about .5" off 1kv in a poorly tuned circuit running ~1.3mhz with a .2nf tank cap... At that point the 25w plate on the vt-136 didn't break a sweat (I couldn't get it to glow regardless of how hard I tried)

I haven't had time to look at my tubes yet, hopefully tomorow.

The secondary base ought to be grounded to the green wire. However, the voltage multiplier has to be referenced to the white neutral wire. The rule is that any current you draw from the live has to be returned down the neutral, not the ground, which is for safety only. Of course RF current doesn't count wink

The 6146 is a beam tetrode and the two vertical lines I drew are the beam plates. They're supposed to be connected to the cathode. I think the 6146 has them hard-wired to the cathode internally though. The control grid is the one at the bottom and the screen is the next one up.

... if you couldn't get the plate to glow, you probably needed more screen voltage and/or a lower impedance tank circuit.

Alright, I have 2 6146 tubes in the mail on their way to me, but I'm wondering on the secondary- I have one made already with 35ga wire 1.8" by 4.75, with a res. frequency around 1MHz, but I was hoping to use a smaller secondary and higher frequency, just so a really small spark doesn't look quite so goofy. Would a 1.25" by 3 or 4" winding of 28 wire be sufficient for a single 6146? The calculated res. frequeny is about 5.2 or 4MHz respectively to each length for it.

On my next trip home, I'm planning on working a bit on the small coil. I have the voltage quadrupler all wired up for 680VDC, have the 6146 tubes, and I'll be looking around the shop to see what capacitors I have available. The only thing I am wondering about still is the secondary size. I know as the Fres goes up, longer sparks are harder to obtain with minimal power. I want a compromise of spark size to secondary ratio, as well as decent spark length in general. What Fres should I aim for? Im also thinking about making a testing capacitor, two fairly large plates that i can move closer together in order to find the right capacitance/primary turns combination, then getting a doorknob around that capacitance so I don't have 2 1 foot square plates to lug around with the coil smile

Once I get it Wired up and working properly, maybe I will use plexy- at least gie it a try. Everything Looks nice sofar (without it put together) smile tongue The multiplier uses 1N5408 diodes (3A 1000V) and 4 560uf Capacitors. And they are wired up pretty smile We'll see how it goes!
