Over the weekend I needed a project, so I thought, why not build a coilgun? I have never seen one before in real life, so I am rather pleased with the results. Rectified AC passes through a rectifier into a bank of small caps salvaged over time from various CRTs. A microwave oven door switch passes the current into the coil, a few turns wrapped round an old pen. A resistor voltage divider lights up an LED when it gets to ~250V. And there is the option of dumping the capacitors into a small lamp.
So where to now? What should I do next? I haave the option of buying 10 1000uF capacitors for £30, or should I improve this design? SCR, better connections, better projectiles? I know I need to improve the safety of it. Thanks, Harry.
