We had a set of 20 6 volt lantern batteries for class use that were bought about 6 years ago, 2 or 3 are bad now, but never were used.
In the past these batteries were tar filled and difficult to take apart , save pulling out carbon rods, So I decided to open one. They were not tarred in, and the assembly just popped open at the top.
Two of the four cells had eaten most of the zinc. The two others were pristine, and for a battery cell with an expiry date in 2008, delivered 6 amps short.
What could of been the starter of the failure of the other two ? There was no liquid anywhere in the case.
The case is interesting because something else could be built in it, and the assembly put back into a lantern flashlight. Perhaps change the bulb to LED and change the device into a combination flashlight/light band transceiver.

Maybe one pair of cells was "shorted" by an internal leakage path between sloppy connections. It would take about 100 microamps to exhaust them in 6 years.
In what physical positions, within the series string, were the bad cells?
