I strongly recommend putting a telltale across any sizable cap bank - a Neon lamp with a 100k or so in series works nicely. That little glow is a timely reminder that the system is hot, and will bite if you touch it.

Thanks!

How would that Neon warning wire up? what kind of neon and 100k being a resistor?

The SCRS came surprisingly fast.. managed to explode one in my face but luckily the shrapnel missed me.. think I've learnt from that one.

At the moment I'm only getting the concept grasped and I am using clips not soldering yet..

I have made the coil but it appears to fire both ways, when I put something at one end it fires and equally the other. What's the deal with that?

A projectile in a coil gun is drawn into the magnetic field, and thus if is of center will accelerate, and hopefully when the projectile reaches the middle of the coil the magnetic field will shut off. Thus allowing the projectile to carry on its cource. This means that the object can be shot no matter which end you put it in. Just do some reasherch on google, there's plenty of information out there as to how they work.

Edit: as for the neon, in series with the resistor then that in parallel with you bank. This will have the added bonus of draining your bank safely if you do not wish to fire it.

Ok its all togethet, no resistors or diodes or decharging yet but it fires.. Problem is it only charges to 100-200 volts. At the moment its only peaking just over 100. I have all 20 caps linked and the scr wired. I know the camera charger is the problem but why is it not reaching max voltage? Thanks

Wait are you fireing without the revers protection diode? That could be bad, it can damage your caps and i think possibly blow your SCR? (correct me if I'm wrong) The reason thats its not charging fully s probably because caps tend to 'leak' (for lack of a better term). So here its probably putting in as much as is 'leaking' out.

here is an example of one: Link2 It is the diode in parallel with the coil. it doesn't have to be two. If you have 1 that is rated high enough that'll be fine.
