It all depends by the inductance of your coil. With Barry's simulator i made a simulation of your coilgun based on your information about it.

Capacitor voltage: 450V.
Capacitance: 10000 uF.
Circuit resistance (capacitor ESR, wiring, coil resistance, etc): 200 mOhm - estimated.
Coil inductance: 300 uH - estimated.

Back - EMF peak current: ~160A - 2 of these diodes in parrallel. 3 to make sure that they won't explode.

WARNING: This is only an estimation. Circuit resistance and coil inductance values are not the correct ones. If the resistance is lower or the inductance higher, current will be higher and will blow up the 2 parallel arranged diodes.

i found these in vishay's sample program. they look pretty promising for coilgun flyback diodes, and with a peak current of 1.5kA, you should only need to use one of them.

strange. works for me
here's the part VS-150EBU04
and if you can't find that, then its under
diodes->rectifiers->150A

few more. one for size comparison with my hunting rifle. other is the fibre glass cover that also houses the led voltmeters.

PSCG: it is sprig loaded bolt action. jus pull back and let go the bolt has a magnet that holdes the projectile so it cant slide out
40: I emailed that site about the diodes, hopfully they get back to me.. have you ever got parts fro that site?

This is where the gunpowder technology meets the electromagnetic projectile accelerators!!!

Congratulations ben5017!!! You have constructed one of the best portable coilgun on the world(and for some reason, it reminds me a real life rifle i've seen)!!!

Keep up your excellent work!!!

And another question for you: what is the projectile data (diameter - caliber, lenght, weight)?

(Because i'm curious and i love sniper - type rifles: What model is your hunting rifle? Is it 0.22 or 0.30 cal?)

You don't have to email them at vishay. they have a sample program. just sign up for that and click "sample request" on any parts that you want that are part of the program. It's free, they don't send you any junk emails, and yes i have ordered from them extensively in the same manner.
I like the led meters. I still need to make/buy some of those.

Update: Replaced the 2 bad caps, mounted the scr, put 5.5 mm gold connectors on the cap bank and scr so that everything is removable.

40: I got a comformation email from vishay, good look letting me know about that site, its very cool. I can see my self using it alot.

pscg: My rifle is a 30-06, I posted a pic showin the projectile and a couple thing for size refrence, my 30-06 bullet and some chapstick

What topology do you use to charge the capacitor bank? And how long does it takes to fully charge the capacitors? It looks like a flyback transformer charger but i cannot understand much from the photo.

Can you paste a schematic diagram?

That is a really really nice coilgun...

What are you using to power the entire thing?
