Thought I'd show off my latest project, a rather beefy Marx generator. It is my second (my first is a 19 stage made from small ceramics).
It is a bipolar generator, and consists of ten 10nF @14kV capacitors from Plastic Capacitors (they are the HG series). I managed to score all 10 for about $USD50 all up at a flea market.
I recently scored 5000 VR37 resistors as well, and built small resistor arrays, so I have 390k between each stage.
The components are mounted on perspex sheets, attached to a frame of PVC conduit, which is held together by glue and nylon bolts (no stray metal here). Overall very sturdy.
Spark gaps are small brass dollhouse doorknobs, each 5mm diameter, mounted in conduit sawed in half lengthwise. Also sturdy! 30kV cable connects it all up.
With a simple 555 based flyback driver, I get about 1 rep per 4 seconds. No doubt a beefier supply will give a much better rate. Could these components stand up to a rectified NST driving it?
Arcs are 18cm long, and LOUD. Total energy stored by the caps is 10 joules.
