Barry's sim will plot a very nice graph to show you when will the maximum power spike occur, so you can have an idea of the mass you'll need to achieve the sweetspot where your projectile uses all the available energy and the coil doesn't pull it back again (I recall seeing a guy in YT where his projectile went away, came inside again and smacked him in the chest lol)
31J denting a box sounds very good! My tests with 24J were barely able to leave a small mark on it :/
ahh ok, so if the projectile goes the wrong way, i could replace the coil with thicker wire? ahh coool ill look that up :), hahahaha funny!
and cooool, and awww im sure itll work finee soon :P i have bought some capacitors which will store 704 joules :D so hopefully thatll work awesomely :D

yes it would but i am well known for doing things the hard way :P lol jk i have an idea for connecting the coil to the cap bank: using a solenoid to connect 2 pieces of metal quickly, and it works well, but the problem is i would have to move them apart every time, have you any experience with this type of switching?

you could use a little spring to return it to it's initial position. I'd really just get an scr though. i sampled a bunch of the 70tps12 (1200v, 75A, 1400A surge, in a to-247 package) scrs from vishay and i haven't looked back to mechanical switches since. they can handle quite a bit more peak current than they are rated for. i've only managed to kill one and thats because i accidentally shorted the caps into the gate.
