I have an SCR and wonder if it would work for a small coilgun?

There's the SCR, it says it can handle 500 amps peak, will this work well for a small coilgun? I have some caps that would work okay for it, 250 volt 1500 uf, and some other assorted ones. I need a charger for it, though. Hrm. Does the SCR need a good heatsink as well?

and, would 20 gauge wire work for the coil?

Thanks!

Play with Barry's sims and do some more looking through the forum, you'll find answers to all your questions.

Since the SCR is in pulsed operation with a very small duty cycle you won't need a heat sink. It won't even get warm to the touch.

20 gauge wire is too thin, it has too much resistance for coilguns. Try 16ga or better yet 12ga. A coil with one or two layers of heavy wire always works better than with more layers.

I think my RLC simulator will help you come up with a coil design for your capacitors. Look for a discharge time in the range of 2 - 10 milliseconds depending on the length of your projectile.

As he said, a heat sink doesn't matter in pulsed applications. The few milliseconds of heat generated will raise the junction temperature and the energy doesn't have time to spread out to a heat sink before the discharge is over.

My suggestion is to buy an inexpensive SCR like that one (and a spare!) and try it. When you blow up the first one, you've learned something. smile

Cheers, Barry

Would litz wire work too? Or am i just over complicating things by trying litz wire?
