wow that looked like it worked really well! (or it could have been that the projectile still tumbled and luckily hit the foam in the orientation it did. any idea how much rpm it was spinning at?

I wish i could tell the RPM... Its a motor from a fixed speed engraver that had 3.6 volt batteries running it. In the video I'm running it at 12v. So its spinning really fast in my eyes... and yeah I'm going to do a test with 5 or so sheets of paper equally spaced to see whether the projectile flies straight or not.

If you have a pot with a free-spinning wiper you can mount the pot shaft to the motor shaft and then put a low voltage across the pot (with a current limiting resistor in series). If you have a multimeter that can measure frequency, just measure between ground and the wiper lead and the frequency will equal motor rounds per second.

I did it this way on a school project (see schematic below, ignore all of it but the actuator part with the pot mounted on top of the gear shaft) but instead of a meter on the pot wiper, it fed into a DAC/computer. Worked great!

I had the very same idea -___- kinda sucks you made it work first. I already bought a high speed camera to proove its spinning.

Nevermind...will finish the big guns first, then come up with my design wink

I decided to give the magnetic rotation another go, what do you guys think of this? I made this little animation that shows what the electromagnets would look like around the barrel.

If a voltage was constant through all of those coils, do you think it would influence the projectile to spin when it passes through them?

The pieces of steel in the animation are the same length as the projectile.
