Was there speculation by some that David Hahn suffered some sickness, and long term injury? Or so I recall hearing.

This is what happens when you rely on tinfoil to stop gamma rays.

"I plan on doing the nuclear boy scout experiment myself some time in the distant future, but unlike Hahn I plan on doing it right."

He also thought he had planned to do it "right"

Now there's some serious health consequences. I predict he will not live to a ripe old age.

The tenth thickness for Lead is 2" and water ~24" but it all depends on what your trying to shield. Alphas you can use paper and with Betas most foils will work but neutrons you have to consider their energy. You could just buy some hafnium which has ~6 stable isotopes and has a high microscopic cross section for absorption for neutrons.

It's not dangerous if done properly...

But first ubuntupokemoninc:
Do you even own a geiger counter? A good one?
Do you even own a dosimeter?
Do you have the capability of casting such a thick box?
Do you have a vial of radium paint? 1uCi of Am-241 ain't gonna cut it.
Do you have a small piece of beryllium to make neutrons?
Do you have hundreds of thorium containing mantles?
Do you have lithium?

If you answer no to any of these questions, don't even bother. This experiment ill cost a lot to do, and you need to know the right people who can supply you with "the goods".
