I started making current transformers and I wasn't sure if I understood the way a single winding primary is done. What qualifies a single winding? I was thinking it had to be a conductor that was wrapped around until it meets itself on the other side of the core. But I have seen toroidal cores simply slid over a copper wire in some cases... Why is that not less than a single winding? I'm having a hard time articulating my question...

Every time the wire passes through the toroid hole, that is one turn.
The arrangement of the rest of the wire doesn't matter, at least in terms of turn count. And it's not possible to get a fraction of a turn on a toroid. (If the wire doesn't go through the hole, it's 0 turns, and if it does, it's 1.)

The magnetic induction depends on the core going once around the wire. From a more conventional perspective: as Steve was saying, the primary wire is part of a circuit which eventually completes a turn around the core. The route of that current path does not matter, as long as it links the magnetic flux loop, i.e. passes through the hole.
