magnets, if not correctly placed, have a good chance at deflecting Alpha and Beta radiation away from the tube... but if you use only gamma, it might work as when the discharge forms the charge should be increased going to the circuit in a similar way that MHD works (charged particles moving in magnetic field produces current... it is one of the theoretical designs I have for my nuclear battery expirements...) However, I do not know if it would work for gamma, and if not you would have to be careful not to deflect alpha or beta (if you want them)

charged particles do not like to move across magnetic field lines. So depending on the orientation of the field, if it is perpendiculer to the electric field inside the chamber it would prevent electrons from reaching the anode. In fact with that geometry you would have a radiation triggered smooth bore magnetron.

I did have an intriguing idea however, integrate a flat geiger tube inside the PCB itself (!) with an ITO coated mica window on top and rely on the copper to make the thing leakproof.
possibly also use the RF detection method to increase sensitivity..
Would be cool to make a small PCB with datalogger and several integrated detectors such as CMOS camera+scintillator, micro geiger, ionisation etc with plated on n thickness lead windows so both the type and direction of radiation can be monitored.
