Today i decided to build a resonant mot bank so i made a little lashup connected to a variac because i dident have a 30A breaker available. With 100v on the primary side this is what i achieved. Link2 Once i get a 30A breaker and some better wire i will be able to run full power smile

Oooh, you can hear the hum the moment the breaker closes. Yum HV arcs.

That's the sh*t! Resonant MOTs are piles of funs. Just a tip, you should edit that video down a lot.

I've often thought that about a lot of "you-tube examples". If you have a small area, what may look good is to pan to the various components, stop (cut), discuss them briefly, stop (cut) then have a safe place to put the camera down so that the angle takes in the arc and the setup fully, but it's safe and your hands are free & you can continue with your dialog with total concentration of the "example arc".

It was a nice arc. But it didn't show up as well as it could because of the downward angle. If you've used the set-up; you know a good multi-MOT arc is large and strong but the 1st time viewer wouldn't see it to it's best; looking downward. If the guy takes time to really think about the best angle for the viewer some of these things would look fantastic.. Plus it's safer for both the person AND the camera to get it stationary and no have to think of anything but the HV process.

The other ting is very minor but I've seen it make a good video.....Turn the sound lower in sensitivity. It takes the clicking and tiny sounds out but the 60Hz hum sound deeper and the voice sounds cleaner if the sound is not at full sensitivity.

Well last night i rewired everything with 10g wire so i will take a video tonight and i will take note on what angle to shoot it at and hopefully it will come out better. Also i am running it at full power now so the arcs will be even bigger cheesey

Just one note, as you start increasing the voltage to the resonant circuit above a certain value (maybe above 1/2 running voltage), the input current starts to decrease. This is because the energy circulating in the caps and transformers has reached its maximum and it needs constant power to keep it running, with more voltage this means less current.

My mot bank drew 20amps (shorted) at 120V but just 8A at 230V.

Edit> teslacoolguy, I just saw you use a third MOT with shorted primary on the hv side. This increases possible resonant voltage by 50% (remember it is limited by saturation) and in extreme cases your caps can pop (as they can see up to 7-8kV peaks), mine did pop in this experiment but you live in a 60Hz country- the higher frequency might not be able to resonate them so high.

But anyway watch for primary temp of the shorted mot. And the statement that input current will decrease probably does not hold for your circuit like you have it connected now.
