I had this idea a few days ago, but decided not to bother posting it. But I thought it would be an interesting idea to consider:

How about a 4hv members records section? For example, largest DRSSTC, largest SGTC, most efficient coil, highest output from a flyback, smallest coil, that sort of thing - and have it documented in a thread or page with a single picture and a short description and maybe a link to a webpage, much like the Guinness book of records. I've noticed there's a bit of friendly competition with things like this, and thought it would be cool to have it all recorded in one place.

What do you think?

I think its a great idea, gives all the newcomers something to awe at. Too bad I haven't got any ground breaking records though...

Sounds like a great idea, Avalanche. It could even start off as just a thread, or if each thing is a finished work of art (as most DRSSTCs are, cased or not), perhaps submissions might go to the project board. That way all submissions are immortalized, and the best few from each category eternalized in a hall of fame.

I'd be happy to help with the design and hosting of the showcasing website.

Just so long as the competition remains 'friendly', and mattrg doesn't start a fat argument on the definition of a tesla coil, hehe ^^

I'll start with the soon-to-be-documented most heavily abused flyback =)

I like the idea, but who is going to decide what the categories are? Without set categories, someone could put up the "most efficient sgtc" but then someone else might just post "most efficient sgtc with NST" and then someone else could put up "most efficient sgtc with de-potted NST" and we'd end up with every coil and flyback on the records thread anyway.

Somehow I don't think that'll be a problem. Even with 'de-potted'/NST arguments, you won't have every single coil in the competition.

If by "friendly" competition, I don't mind hosting the best few from each category, then there won't be anybody thumbing their noses at anyone else.

Hell, you wouldn't necessarily need to make it so strict by categorisation. Initially I wouldn't mind a free-for-all where people just pimp the best of their work, and it all goes up for display.

e.g. one DRSSTC might make awesomely thick arcs, and another might have a sexy fabricated acrylic base, machined primary former, and a whole lot of effort going into the controls and appearance. Both deserve display.

Is further argument necessary? I hope not.

Avalanche, I'll start work on a webpage for you tonight.

Brilliant, thanks blackplasma! Glad to see people think it's a good idea too.

As for categories, I agree a 'free for all' approach would be good to start it off, so basically if you have some thing that you 'think would take some beating' then a category can be created for it.

I think all members here are trustworthy enough to not try and get in the records by submitting things with small details changed, so hopefully it will remain fairly tidy. As a general rule of thumb, stick to the top 1 or 2 levels only - for example, 'Tesla coil > spark gap > greatest efficiency', or 'Flyback > Longest Arc obtained'.
