Two variations of a VTTC circuit, which is better?

I recently built my first VTTC following Steve Ward's schematic (found here) and it is working well.


My friend who has built coils for many years showed me an alternate circuit that uses a coupling capacitor between the plate and tank circuit (shown here)

Are there any distinct benefits to using my friend's design? What would be the pros of cons of doing it this way? I have an extra mica cap that I could use with this circuit but before I go to the trouble of rewiring my coil I am curious to see if anyone else has tried this way before and what the results were. Thanks!

Is that second circuit missing a rectifier?
Looks like it applies AC to the plate.

I actually omitted the level shifter from the first circuit so the way I'm using it it applies ac to the plate and everything is working fine. I guess the second one is the same.

it is basically the same circuit ward circuit is proven and the second one is missing parts

It looks like your friend has been building tube audio amplifiers, since he included a coupling capacitor / DC blocking capacitor. We do not really need to take so much care about a little extra plate dissipation in a VTTC, its quite the abuse to start with anyway :)

This is the answer I was looking for! My friend is very oldschool and does not use the internet except for ebay sometimes, so you are probably right about where he got his circuit idea from.

Steve's circuit certainly works well!!! I was just curious about this variation. Thanks!
