With this schematic I assume C7 and C8 limit the current flowing through the primary coil. On account of the fact they conduct DC until they are fully charged.

So how does one calculate what the peak current through the primary coil will be?

With my power supply, I need to limit the peak current to about 5A....certainly no more than 10A.

And what about possible shoot through across that half bridge?

C7 and C8 serve as a voltage divider for your half-bridge. Current will depend on the duty cycle you'll be running your coil at

Shoot-trough is a possibility if you get the GDT phasing wrong (or the frequency is too high and switching is too slow). But don't worry about it, just double check the GDT phase

Is there a recommended way to limit the current more permanently than that, for testing purposes with a 19V/3.5A laptop power supply?

Also how would you calculate the peak current given a particular duty cycle?
