Hi all, It's been ages since I have had the opportunity to work on an HV project, but I recently decided to build a Marx Generator for use in bench-testing lightning arrestors in antennas and radio transceivers. Some details:
10 multiplier stages 1nF 40kV doorknob capacitors used in each stage 0.6 mH inductors (self wound) as interstage pulse isolation (about 200 turns 0f 0.25mm wire on 32mm PVC pipe) Spark gaps use dome nuts on M4 screws 555 timer-based ignition coil driver. I estimate about 18-20kV per stage (approximate 180kV total multiplied output voltage). 36 1kV rectifiers in series (each in parallel with 2kV 100pF capacitor and 10Meg resistor for DC bleed/cap self-discharge on turn off)
Based on the size of the capacitors in the Marx ladder, I estimate the firing energy to be about 3 joules or so. This can be varied by adjusting the spark gaps (the firing voltage).
