Perhaps this is a silly question (tried searching for an answer but couldn't find anything)...

Can the primary coil of a TC have an induction heating effect on steel hardware? I have a large 2in diameter steel washer with a 1/4in steel bolt at the base of my secondary coil. Should I be concerned with any energy losses because of it? The frequency is probably around 400kHz (EVRs microbrute).

Cheers.

The primary circuit of a Tesla coil is no different from the one in a induction heater, so yes it will heat up metal in the proximity of the electromagnetic field.

I wrote about this in the primary circuit part of my DRSSTC guide: Link2

Another thing about induction heating is that the primary coil is actually heating up itself from induction heating, one of the biggest losses in primary coils are contributed to proximity losses, which I discuss using Medhurts method in the Secondary coil part here: Link2

I have used my TC to cook eggs in a cast iron (induction compatible) frying pan.

Ran for over 10 min at 2kW+ so was a good stress test of the TC in general, and as Mads mentioned above, the primary got warmer than anything else.

I did not cook anything on it, but here is 14kW into a metal plate, highly inefficient!

Your plate is too small and too far away from the coil :p
