Hi all.

This is a teaser: the main bulk of this is still being written but let me know what you think.

They said it couldn't be done, that no material existed which could possibly power such an exotic propulsion system and even if it were somehow possible then it would never be approved because of the "Outer Space Treaty" not least violate numerous anti-proliferation treaties and threaten global stability.

It took one man's dream, funding from a secretive global organization and several breakthroughs based in part on secret almost-forgotten research dating from the late 1940's in an underground laboratory somewhere in Nevada to finally get it to work, and the prototype engine launched into LEO using the plausible cover story of a new "space drive" orbital test.
Of course the developers of the new drive in question were made aware and their prototype merely incorporated into the test
craft just to keep their investors happy while being paid handsomely with valuable scientific data for their assistance.

Early on in the development it was intriguingly discovered that a nuclear research laboratory funded by the Russian Government had inadvertently isolated a compound very similar to the one eventually used but they could never get it to stabilize.
It took another two decades for them to belatedly realize the implications of merely adding another pair of neutrons using the correct formula as the secret turned out to be using 1930's technology in the form of a Farnsworth fusor with 2017 AI and quantum annealing feedback to get the right metastable isotope forming within the test chamber.

The prototype engine was a variant of a very old concept of an "Orion" pulsed nuclear drive but the addition of a metastable superheavy element made the pulse units far more compact as well as a great deal safer. Adding the recent discovery of a stable titanium/gold beta compound doped with tungsten showing a shear strength and melting point approaching that of iridium was the final pieze of the puzzle.

I'm guessing its a novel, if it is you seem to have fallen into my trap of using too many adverbs.
It reads a bit like the opening to a cheesy film, not sure that's what you were going for.
