Animation of the "Rising Egg" Phenomenon

When a hard-boiled egg is spun sufficiently rapidly on a table with its axis of symmetry horizontal, the axis will rise from the horizontal to the vertical. The egg's center of mass rising against gravity.
The equations of motion from [1] were simulated to make this animation.

Does this require friction? Usually a spinning top just precesses.

Yes, friction is needed for the rise. With out friction, the "egg" will just sit there rotating with its axis of symmetry horizontal.

That makes it clear how it works. You need a horizontal force to create a vertical angular momentum component.

Absolutely right, the friction also of course causes a loss of energy (kinetic plus potential) verses time. The equations of motion can also show some very complex behavior for example if the initial spin is large the normal force at the point of contact can oscillate and become so large that the egg jumps off the surface of the table for a short time. This is discussed in the second part of the above paper.
