Suitable for TC use??

I was given this cap a while ago. .0438 uF @ 50 KVDC. Only good for 180 PPS. Short runs, maybe?? I know it's much easier to size a cap bank to a transformer, rather than the other way around. My xfmr stock right now is: 14.4, 5 KVA pole pig, 13.2 KV potential xfmr, Matching pair of 12 KV @ 60 mA (each) NST's and a 7.5 KV @ 120 mA NST. So how could I put this monster cap to use?

Wait a minute here! You have a bucket full of doorknobs in the background that are much easier to match to a NST just sitting right there.

I use doorknobs all the time and they work fine. Use your beast-cap for some kind of impulse generator instead, and use the doorknobs for the TC, they fit much easier under the hood anyway.

I wondered if anyone would pick up on that. Unfortunately, that's only a few TDK door knobs sitting on the lid of that 5 gallon pail. I wish that was a whole pail full of 3000 pf @ 40 KV TDK's.

I see. You do have enough doorknobs then for 60mA NST.

I have a radar pulse cap too, 2x ,055uF I think, and to make a TC out of it you really should use a DC charging system which means you need a hefty charging inductor too with a very high standoff voltage rating. This makes the system very large and difficult to move as well as very heavy.

I would estimate your charging system to weigh about 500lbs, transformer, cap, rectifier, inductor and rotary, possibly more depending on the transformer and the oil.

It's not impossible, but SGTC is going to be very large and cumbersome. You'd probably be better off with a SSTC because you could get the arc length you're looking for in a smaller package.

If you wanted to make some kind of pulsed fusor, that would probably work because it's not spitting out 12 foot arcs, and you don't need 5 friends to help wheel it outside, the drawback to anything nuclear however is the risk and the need for detection equipment to keep you safe.
