I've been messing around a bit with a medium size SSTC using an Edgertronic video camera to show the sparks, both in air and in various noble gases. Thee resolution is not the best but the camera is about 1/10 to 1/20th as expensive as a Phantom Miro or Flex.

Here are the sparks in air at 5000 frames/second, Link2

And the sparks in four different containers of noble gases, Link2

And finally a close-up of the neon flask, Link2

The coil is running at about 200kHz and is based on loneoceans SSTC4 board.

Cheers.

Beautiful footage you got right there, I am eager to get my FPS1000 camera to be able to record similar videos, I should be able to get 5000FPS in 512x384, but as you show less resolution can do, so maybe it will be 15100FPS in 256x192

I really love the blue flashes in the end of the noble gas video, could you make a version with slower playback?

I edited the file to add a shot of each of the gases at 1/10 normal speed.

There is no further detail, but the action is now a kind of stop-action that shows each step the spark evolution. Link2

Cheers.

Great video! I love how the arcs grow along the inside surface of the glass.

Mads, I'm waiting for my FPS1000 as well, did you go for any of the upgrades?

Platinum double, as that seemed to be the greatest FPS to the €, however since all platinum models got the double upgrade it is now only a different sensor, not memory amount. The top model was just too expensive for me :)

Welcome to 4hv, Alan.

I recognized your name from your spectacular portfolio on Flickr of short-flash photos.
Just noticed that you do long exposures too. Applause for the one of Orion rising over rocks & trees at Mt Baldy, in what at first glance could be a daytime photo.

Your recent posts here have drawn Nik out of the woodwork. smile

Did you make your SSTC from scratch?

I had a "Photron" savings account on the go when the FPS1000 started so I went with the hex but the way things are going its gonna be another 6-8moths before it ships.

Rich,

No the SSTC is from loneoceans SSTC4 "Tesla on a Board".

As I'm sure that you know, he does a great job. I was able to get it from turn-on to satisfactory performance (~12 inch ungrounded sparks) in about an hour. The coil was wound on a dead simple plywood and dowel jig and the topload is the classic aluminum vent/bondo/tape construction. Nothing new here, move along.

I'm trying to duplicate the excellent plasma globe/tube work that Carl Willis and zrg have done. Initially I just tried to buy the darn things but had no luck so I'm currently spending way too much time trying to roll my own. The Tesla coil is just an excuse to power up a bunch of the things at once.

Glad you like the photos. I've gotten more than my share of attention from the things.

Cheers.
