Optic Interface

Hi Guys,
I’ve seen an optic interface from a control box to a Tesla coil a few times,
one of them in one of Photonicinduction’s YouTube videos.

I have a frequency generator written for a pic micro, with LCD and hardware serial interface working,

and now am looking to use serial over an optical interface instead of the pair of wires.
Assuming some people here would have already done this.. questions...

Is a standard serial protocol usually used?
Is Toslink physical hardware usually used (same as SPDIF interfaces for audio)?

Edit: I’ve had success making a 2400 baud serial connection
with Toslink hardware receiver buffered through a 7404.
Looks like I’ll have an optical connected keypad :)

Hi :) Neither are really ready, I only got it reliable enough tot send a text file with no errors last night, and only have tried 2400 baud.

This schematic isn’t up to date. It was only reliable once I added a 7404 and buffered the receiver’s signal with that.
The code is in Picbasic Pro, and won’t compile without it. Mostly in assembler for midrange pic, but I use PBP for it’s canned LCD routines.

What transmitters and receivers are you using?

Most Toslink components are AC coupled and can only receive down to 0.1Mb/s or so. You also have to ensure DC balance in the signal you are trying to transmit.

HI :) The receiver I salvaged from a box that converted optical to coax.
It had a capacitor in series with the signal path of the receiver,
and I removed that, and instead used a 0.1uF cap between the signal path and ground.
The transmitter at the moment is a high intensity LED.

The transmitter outputs true, so I used two inverters of the 7404.
