Rsg timing on ac peak

I have a big tesla coil that I built last year and it was asynchronous on the rsg. REF video..........https://www.youtube.com/watch? v=5b_dh45PZ2A

I have recently taken an old washing machine motor and made it synchronous by the machining flats method on the armature. I have my own business / machine shop / stamping plant here in the states. I adapted it as an experiment to see if it would work synchronous on the rsg. It does run synchronous and I have also modified a radio shack strobe light to be synchronous at 60 hz to be used as a timing light to prove it. However I do not know where I am at during the firing vs the ac sine wave peak. I have read your info on this and I am not quite sure how to do this. Aligning the two.

I can go with the variac control method but do not have it at this time.

I ran the tesla coil the other night for a test and it works just like it should. But I have no idea where I am on timing.

Do I put a small coil of wire close to the tesla coil while running and look at it on say channel one while looking at the ac sine on channel two to compare the timing of each. I guess I should say here that I am using the old fashioned way of setting the timing (ahead of time) by turning the adjustment mechanically and then running the coil. See pics of rsg and motor.

Also one other thing that I have noted is that the motor gets warm only when running on the tesla coil. Is this a high freq. thing effecting the motor? How do I combat it?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.
