Hi all,

Several years ago now I built a giant musical tesla coil, but never told any of y'all about it.

Figured it's worth sharing smile

- Bridge caps store 1.2kJ with 120mOhm ESR
- Tank is an MMC from the foil plate CDE caps everyone loves
- Coil diameter, 14 inch. Built on custom formed fiberglass tube.
- H bridge is 2x CM1400DU-24NF, with isolated 20A gate drivers. ~300ns rise time, beats the datasheet by a factor of 4 smile
- Peak current limited to 1500A
- Bus voltage 350V or optionally 590V on 208V.
- Polyphonic midi control

It took about a month to built. Been going strong ever since, even surviving multiple rainstorms.

@woodchuck:
That's it! The old 45 by "Hot Butter"

@Adam:
...ever considered "Flight of the Bumblebee?

GREAT COIL!
Build a twin and put on "Dueling Banjos"

We know the light can be modulated, but what about different colors per coil setup?

Very nice! I remember seeing a few build photos on facebook at the time you were working on it, it's great to finally see the final result.

It is pretty clear that you are running without a single break out point, but do you have multiply small break out points or is it just the toroid having a real uneven surface?

Might be interesting to put different metal salts on the various breakout points.

What’s happening when a spark lights the whole camera frame?
Happens 3 or 4 times.

Probably a ground strike.
